Honey is the only food on the planet that will not spoil or rot. It will do
what some call turning to sugar. In reality honey is always honey. However,
when left in a cool dark place for a long time it will do what I rather call
“crystallizing”.

When this happens I loosen the lid, boil some water, and sit the honey
container in the hot water, off the heat and let it liquefy. It is then as
good as it ever was.

Never boil honey or put it in a microwave. To do so will kill the enzymes in
the honey.

I read this great article in the youdocs newsletter yesterday. It’s about nine thingsa we can do to help foil Alzheimer’s. And I quote:

“Your Brain’s Ideal Day
By Michael Roizen, M.D., and Mehmet Oz, M.D.

End your day feeling as sharp as when you started with these strategies:

Fill your cup. Coffee (six cups a day) can reduce your risk of Alzheimer’s disease by more than 20 percent.

Rise to the challenge. Hit a tough problem first thing in the morning? Good! Constant mental challenges are Miracle-Gro for your mind.

Walk to lunch. Regular, moderate exercise cuts dementia odds in half.

Order up some Mediterranean food. Eating more fish, fruits, veggies, whole grains and legumes than most Americans do (not difficult!) reduces your risk of Alzheimer’s by up to 40 percent. (This also means avoiding added sugars, syrups, trans fats, saturated fats and any grain but 100 percent whole grain.)

Spice it up. Indians have 75 percent less brain dysfunction and Alzheimer’s at the same age as Westerners. The reason: It’s thought to be the curcumin-derivative turmeric found in curry (and inexpensive mustards).

Savor a little chocolate. Chocolate keeps your brain happy, possibly by keeping your arteries young.

Slice it (on the ping-pong table). Playing a sport that requires fast changes in direction improves balance and memory.

Practice! Playing music bolsters language areas of your brain. Bonus: You can be bad at it (keep the day job!) and still benefit.

Pop some DHA and D. DHA is the omega-3 fat that helps keep brain cells young. Get 600 mg a day from fortified foods or DHA supplements. And add 1,000 IU of vitamin D-3 to help keep the arteries going to your brain younger, too.”

Every once in a while I find some book or article that actually has a new thought or idea, at least new to me. I found a book called “complete Idiot’s Guide To Natural Remedies” in the supermarket line up the other day and being the natural remedy user that I am I bought it.

Part One is a series of Headings with 1 or 2 paragraphs each and one in particular caught my attention. A heading that read; “Paying Your Own Way” it goes on to say, “For some people it’s worth it to pay out of pocket to see a naturopathic physician, even when their insurance won’t cover it. People feel like it’s worth it if they get 50 minutes of uninterrupted time rather than leave with a prescription and a lot of unanswered questions.” Dr Gilardi also says “it makes you feel like you can make a difference and you feel empowered because you learn you can make the right decisions for your lifestile.”

It made me think about the changes I have already made and about changes I can still make to make my lifestile a healthier one.

Part 2 is a list of ailments and what can be done about them. Each has a discription of the ailment, a diet that help, a preventative, topical treatments and other types of therapies. It is written in very plain English so is very easy to understand.

I liked this book so I thought you might want to take a look at it too.

It was a nice thought but when it comes right down to it I just don’t have that kind of time right now.

So I thought maybe PLR articles and an article rotator. They seem to be very popular and very available. Well I tried that on the home page of my website but it just doesn’t sit right with me, most of the PLR articles I had read were just a grouping of disjointed thoughts that when read did not always make much sense never mind good advice. So what to do? hmmm…

Over the years I have collected a lot of information and done a lot of research. So while I was looking through some of my old note books I decided to start writing my own content again. I might not post knew stuff everyday but what I do post will be well researched and properly written.

So where to start, let’s see. How about with some more information on one of the first things I wrote about on my blog.

As flu and cold season progresses we need all the help we can get to fight them. One of the most delicious ways I know of is to eat and drink delicious treats made with Elderberries like jams, jellies, pies, wines and cordials. The Elder tree and some of it’s other parts are also used in herbal medicine and beauty products. I have a lot of information about elderberries that I have not published yet. So I will put it together some articles and publish them on my website. The first one is already published the next one will be ready in a couple of days.

Till next time rememberÂ

Ok, what the heck is TMJ? I looked it up on the web and it stands for Temoromandibular Joint Disorder. Simplified, severe jaw pain. Not all jaw pain is TMJ. If you suddenly find your jaw aching, see your doctor. It could be a sign of serious health problems, including an on coming heart attack. That being said, I will get on with my tail of woes, including all the things I did wrong, and how I am now attacking the problem.

First things first:Â

What I did wrong:

Self diagnosed: I grabbed my little bag of symptoms and struck out across cyberspace in search of the answer to what I was suffering from. (No doctor involved). If it had been a looming heart attack I would have been hooped.

Self medicated: The first thing I did was start taking an over the counter pain reliever coctail of 2 acetaminaphen and 2 ibuprophen, both extra strength. Not necessarily a bad thing once or twice, but I took this coctail every two to three hours for nearly a month. The affect on my stomach, bowels and sleep habits was horrible.

Treated the symptoms rather than the root cause: OK, so what’s wrong with that? I kept the pain away and found a measure of comfort. For starters pain is your friend. Without it you would not know there is a problem, and when you use enough pain relievers to keep the pain away you have no way of knowing when you are cured. Secondly, the longer you just mask the symptoms without attacking the root problem, the longer you will have the problem and the more severe and dangerous it may become.

Attacking the Problem:

First, my symptoms and their progression:

The pain started as a dry crackling sensation in the area of my upper jaw and cheek, that felt like the start of a sinus infection. (I attacked it with colodial silver and mild saline nasal sprays.) It only got worse, so I hit it with decongestants. That made things even worse.

Then it started to feel like a tooth ache. Since there was no apparent swelling, I assumed there was no absess. (again, a mistake. should have seen a doctor or dentist.) If you apply heat to an absess you could well pop it and spread infection through your body.

The pain progressed to a deep burning and throbbing throughout my entire jaw and left side of my face. It was so severe that at that point if I had figured gnawing my wife’s leg off would ease the pain, she would have a serious limp today.

On to how I am fixing the problem…

First things first: back to the research.

I learned that TMJ is most likely caused by muscular or nervous tension that could be brought on by a number of things, including clenching your jaws habitually, grinding your teeth (often occurs in you sleep Your spouse or dentist can probably tell you if this is happening), poor jaw alignment caused by crooked teeth, badly aligned or worn dentures, missing teeth (I haven’t had teeth for nearly 35 years, I’m guessing this would be the cause of my problem) or any number of habits and disorders. Your medical or dental professional can help you isolate the cause.

Attacking the problem:

I opted to try alternating hot and cold compresses every couple of hours, applied directly to the area of the worst pain. (Danger Will Smith! Danger! If the pain is in fact caused by something like an absess, tumor, or any number of things other than TMJ the application of heat will likely put you at serious risk. Let your doctor determine this)

After applying a bean bag that I heated in the microwave to the side of my face for 5 minutes I then applied a cloth that I wet under the cold water tap for 5 minutes. I repeated this several times throughout the day and just before going to sleep at night. I took no pain pills.

Day One:

Throughout the day the pain continued even after the compresses were applied, but it got less severe with each application. That night I slept comfortably for about two hours until the pain woke me. I repeated the applications and slept in 2 hour bites through the night, repeating the compresses each time I woke up. It wasn’t a really good night, but it was no worse than when I was using the drug coctail. I woke up the next morning feeling considerably less groggy and much better rested for having stopped the pills.

Day 2:

I spent most of the day just napping and applying the compresses. There was constant low level discomfort throughout the day, but no sever pain. That night I repeated the procedure just before going to sleep and slept through the night without pain. I woke up barely aware of the problems I had been suffering.

Day 3:

That would be today. There is no pain yet, but I will continue the treatment for a few more days, then stop it and see if the problem returns. Please check back for updates.

Some Cautionary Notes:

I was lucky, not smart! I’ve found relief and haven’t died. If you believe your jaw pain is caused by TMJ or another muscular or nervous disorder please use the link below to download a printer friendly copy of this post and take it to your doctor. Have him or her read it. You will avoid some of the mistakes I made if you attack your condition in consultation with your medical professional. I may sound like I am nagging about the doctor thing, but he is a vital part of any diagnosis or treatment.

One serious mistake I made was thinking that if the problem is from muscle tension, adding a muscle relaxant(robaxiset) to the coctail would help. Result: I immediately felt like I had swallowed a can of lighter fluid with a lit match chaser. Your MD knows what drugs to mix.

This is an article my husband received from one of his fellow camp cooks. It is very appropriate for this time of the year when we are picnicing more. I know I like to have all kinds of salads when I go on a picnic and most of them have things like mayonnaise onions in them.

“DON’T KEEP CUT ONIONS”

“Watch out for those spoiled onions…I had the wonderful privilege of touring Mullins Food Products, makers ofmayonnaise. Mullins is huge, owned by brothers and sisters in the Mullins

family. My friend, Jeanne, is the CEO.

Questions about food poisoning came up, and I wanted to share what I

learned from a chemist. The man who gave us our tour is named Ed.

He’s one of the brothers. Ed is a chemistry expert involved in developing most of the sauce formula. (He’s even developed sauce formula for McDonald’s.)

Keep in mind that Ed is a food chemistry whiz. During the tour, someone

asked if we really needed to worry about mayonnaise. People are always

worried that mayonnaise will spoil. Ed’s answer will surprise you.

He said that all commercially-made Mayo is completely safe.

“It doesn’t even have to be refrigerated. No harm in refrigerating

it, but it’s not really necessary.” He explained that the pH in

mayonnaise is set at a point that bacteria could not survive in that environment. He then talked about the quintessential picnic with the bowl of potato salad sitting on the table and how everyone blames the mayonnaise in it when someone gets sick.

Ed says that when food poisoning is reported, the first thing the

officials look for is when the victim last ate ONIONS and where those

onions came from (in the potato salad?). He says it’s not the mayonnaise (as long as it’s not homemade Mayo) that spoils in the outdoors.

It’s probably the onions, and if not the onions, it’s the POTATOES. He

explained that onions are a huge magnet for bacteria, especially uncooked

onions.

You should never plan to keep a portion of a sliced onion. He says it’s

not even safe if you put it in a zip-lock bag and put it in your refrigerator. It’s already contaminated enough just by being cut open and out for a bit that it can be a danger to you. (And doubly watch out for those onions you put on your hotdogs at the baseball park!)

Ed says if you take the leftover onion and cook it like crazy, you’ll

probably be okay, but if you slice that leftover onion and put it in your

sandwich, you’re asking for trouble. Both the onions and the moist potato

in a potato salad will attract and grow bacteria faster than any commercial

mayonnaise will even begin to break down.

So, how’s that for news? Take it for what you will. I (the author) am

going to be very careful about onions from now on. I see a lot of credibility in this info, coming from a chemist and a company that produces millions of pounds of mayonnaise every year.

(Dogs should never eat onions.. Their stomachs cannot metabolize them.)

Who knew!

Â

Then I was angry and now I am worried. I received a letter to the editor from a very trusted friend and I have been wondering if I should post here or just put a link. You see I trust my friend completely but I am not sure where she got it from. Also the reaction that it would receive worries me. I would not want to cause any problems in any way for anyone.

The article is about a food we eat every day and give to our children thinking we are giving them something good for them not knowing exactly what it is we are giving them.

Why? Because it is more convenient than the original and we can assume that most people will eat them because we have been told for generations that these things are good for us. But that was then and this now. We are the generation that is to busy to do things the way we used to and that’s ok. We just have to be careful of the things we accept as ok just because we find it on store shelves.

While I have been writing this post I have decided to post a link to the article in question. If you would like to read it just click here.

Hi Everyone, Well I finally published my herbal website. It is not totally finished I have to add a couple more pages.

I could really use some help with them. One will be a FAQ page and the other will be reccommended links page. If you go to the forms page you can leave suggestions, ideas, links you would like to see on the links page or just a comment. I will personally read and answer them all. It might take a couple of days to get back to you but I will get back to you asap.

This was my goal for the first half of 2009 and I am a little early, (maybe, if I get those other 2 pages done).

So go on over and have a look. The URL is http://www.herbal-helpers.com .

Recently I found some information about about a very inexpensive and effective way to eliminate germs on you, in you and around your house as well.

What is this wonderful discovery, it is….., Â peroxide.

Yup good old Peroxide, who knew?

Here is an article that a friend of mine sent me today. No not the same friend that sent the one about “Alternative to Kemo”. Now you know I have at least 2 friends, lol.

Anyway have a read and let me know if you have any more uses for peroxide or any else that is natural and non-toxic and can be used for more than it’s normal application.

“Peroxide, who knew?

(safer and healthier than bleach)
This was written by Becky Ransey of Indiana (a doctor’s wife), and I want to share it with you. She was over recently for coffee and smelled the bleach I was using to clean my toilet and countertops. This is what she told me…

I would like to tell you of the benefits of that plain little old bottle of 3% peroxide you can get for under $1.00 at any drug store. (Bob Giddens recently bought a 32 ounce bottle at Wal-Mart for ninety-four cents.)

My husband has been in the medical field for over 36 years, and most doctors don’t tell you about peroxide. Have you ever smelled bleach in a doctor’s office? No!! Why? Because it smells, and it is not healthy! Ask the nurses who work in the doctor’s offices, and ask them if they use bleach at home. They are wiser and know better!

Did you also know bleach was invented in the late forties? It’s chlorine, folks! It was used to kill our troops in World War II. Peroxide came into popular use during and after WWI. It was used to save and help cleanse the needs of our troops and hospitals. Please think about this.
1. Take one capful and hold in your mouth for ten minutes daily, then spit it out (I do it when I bathe). No more canker sores, and your teeth will be whiter without expensive pastes. Use it instead of mouthwash.

2. Let your toothbrushes soak in a cup of peroxide to keep them free of germs. (good one!)

3. Clean your counters and table tops with peroxide to kill germs and leave a fresh smell. Simply put a little on your dishrag when you wipe, or spray it on the counters. (Wouldn’t it be nice if restaurants would do this?)

4. After rinsing your wooden cutting board, pour peroxide on it to kill salmonella and other bacteria. Â

5. I had fungus on my feet for years until I sprayed a 50/50 mixture of peroxide and water on them (especially the toes) every night and let dry. Â

6. Soak any infections or cuts in 3% peroxide for five to ten minutes several times a day. My husband has seen gangrene that would not heal with any medicine but was healed by soaking in peroxide. Â

7. Fill a spray bottle with a 50/50 mixture of peroxide and water and keep it in every bathroom to disinfect without harming your septic system like bleach or most other disinfectants will.

8. Tilt your head back and spray into nostrils with your 50/50 mixture whenever you have a cold, plugged sinus. It will bubble and help to kill the bacteria. Hold for a few minutes, and then blow your nose into a tissue. (really good one!)

9. If you have a terrible toothache and cannot get to a dentist right away, put a capful of 3% peroxide into your mouth and hold it for ten minutes several times a day. The pain will lessen greatly. Â

10. And of course, if you like a natural look to your hair, spray the 50/50 solution on your wet hair after a shower and comb it through You will not have the peroxide-burnt blonde hair like the hair dye packages but more natural highlights if your hair is a light brown, reddish, or dirty blonde. It also lightens gradually, so it’s not a drastic change. (hmmm!)Â

11. Put half a bottle of peroxide in your bath to help rid boils, fungus, or other skin infections.

12. Add a cup of peroxide instead of bleach to a load of whites in your laundry to whiten them. If there is blood on clothing, pour it directly on the soiled spot. Let it sit for a minute, then rub it and rinse with cold water. Repeat if necessary. (I’ll try it!)Â Â

13. I use peroxide to clean my mirrors. There is no smearing, which is why I love it so much for this.

I could go on and on. It is in a dark bottle so it will not be degraded by UV. No home should be without it! With prices of most necessities rising, here’s a way to save tons of money in a simple, healthy manner! Â

This information really woke me up. I hope you gain something from it, too.

Pass it on!

Remember friends
