A thought about life and time.

Filed under: Good For Your Whole Being — admin @ 3:14 pm

This is some quite of topic for my blog but I though it was very, for want of a better word, profound. I found this short poem, author unknown. If anyone recognizes this please let me know where it comes from. I like it very much and would like to read more.

Cyclic cycles of in and out

Each going each way, then around about

Who knows the wind waters ways

The breathe of life, the one that saves

To see the truth, one needs to hear the word

The inward spiral, the outward curve

The moment kept as the endless day

Balance is the eternal ONE

Forever shining bright as the sun

Never shall there be a need that won’t be fillied

the seed of life has been planted

aAnd the fields have been tilled

That is all I found so anyone that knows this piecs of writing please leave a comment and tell me where I can find it.

Anticipating Spring

Filed under: Seasons — admin @ 10:52 am

The long cold days are a great time to plan for the spring garden upgrade. You have more time for contemplation and planning. What would you like to add or change in your garden this year.

A good place to start is taking a close look at your garden, is there any activity or is it empty of life? Try to imagine what a bird would look for in a place to spend time. They need shelter, trees or dense shrubs will do. Is there food and water to help them through the cold winter days and nights, ?

What kind of trees and shrubs do you have? Do any of them have berries or other fruits they can eat? Is your garden a bird sanctuary? Take a look at your garden, does it meet the basic needs of the birds or can it be improved? Having a good plan is the first place to start, I have started on mine . How about you?

Important information that you might like to have.

Filed under: Who Knew Stuff — admin @ 12:11 pm

An entomologist (insect expert), has been saying that there is an epidemic of bed bugs now occurring in America. Recently I have heard on the news that several stores in NYC have had to close due to bed bug problems, as well as a complete mall in New Jersey.

He says that since much of our clothing, sheets, towels, etc. now comes from companies outside of America, (sad but true), even the most expensive stores sell foreign clothing from China, Indonesia, etc. The bed bugs are coming in on the clothing as these countries do not consider them a problem. He recommends that if you buy any new clothing, even underwear and socks, sheets, towels, etc. that you bring them into the house and put them in your clothes dryer for at least 20 minutes. The heat will kill them and their eggs. DO NOT HANG NEWLY PURCHASE CLOTHES IN THE CLOSET BEFORE YOU MAKE SURE THERE ARE NO UNINVITED GUESTS. It does not matter what the price range is of the clothing, or if the outfit comes from the most expensive store known in the U.S. They still get shipments from these countries and the bugs can come in a box of scarves or anything else for that matter. That is the reason why so many stores, many of them clothing stores have had to shut it down in NYC and other places. All you need is to bring one item into the house that has bugs or eggs and you will go to hell and back trying to get rid of them. He travels all over the country as an advisor to many of these stores, as prevention and after they have the problem.

Send this information on to those on your e-mail list so that this prevention information gets around quickly.

If you have something to say that is relevent Please leave a comment.

Cinnamon And Honey

Filed under: Good For Your Whole Being — admin @ 9:18 am

Cinnamon and Honey, The new “cure all”?

Honey is the only food on the planet that will not spoil or rot. It will do
what some call turning to sugar. In reality honey is always honey. However,
when left in a cool dark place for a long time it will do what I rather call
“crystallizing”.

When this happens I loosen the lid, boil some water, and sit the honey
container in the hot water, off the heat and let it liquefy. It is then as
good as it ever was.

Never boil honey or put it in a microwave. To do so will kill the enzymes in
the honey.

Are you concerned about Alzheimer’s?

Filed under: Good For Your Whole Being — admin @ 10:46 am

I read this great article in the youdocs newsletter yesterday. It’s about nine thingsa we can do to help foil Alzheimer’s. And I quote:

Your Brain’s Ideal Day
By Michael Roizen, M.D., and Mehmet Oz, M.D.

End your day feeling as sharp as when you started with these strategies:

Fill your cup. Coffee (six cups a day) can reduce your risk of Alzheimer’s disease by more than 20 percent.

Rise to the challenge. Hit a tough problem first thing in the morning? Good! Constant mental challenges are Miracle-Gro for your mind.

Walk to lunch. Regular, moderate exercise cuts dementia odds in half.

Order up some Mediterranean food. Eating more fish, fruits, veggies, whole grains and legumes than most Americans do (not difficult!) reduces your risk of Alzheimer’s by up to 40 percent. (This also means avoiding added sugars, syrups, trans fats, saturated fats and any grain but 100 percent whole grain.)

Spice it up. Indians have 75 percent less brain dysfunction and Alzheimer’s at the same age as Westerners. The reason: It’s thought to be the curcumin-derivative turmeric found in curry (and inexpensive mustards).

Savor a little chocolate. Chocolate keeps your brain happy, possibly by keeping your arteries young.

Slice it (on the ping-pong table). Playing a sport that requires fast changes in direction improves balance and memory.

Practice! Playing music bolsters language areas of your brain. Bonus: You can be bad at it (keep the day job!) and still benefit.

Pop some DHA and D. DHA is the omega-3 fat that helps keep brain cells young. Get 600 mg a day from fortified foods or DHA supplements. And add 1,000 IU of vitamin D-3 to help keep the arteries going to your brain younger, too.”

Every once in a while…

Filed under: Good For Your Whole Being — admin @ 10:12 pm

Every once in a while I find some book or article that actually has a new thought or idea, at least new to me. I found a book called “complete Idiot’s Guide To Natural Remedies” in the supermarket line up the other day and being the natural remedy user that I am I bought it.

Part One is a series of Headings with 1 or 2 paragraphs each and one in particular caught my attention. A heading that read; “Paying Your Own Way” it goes on to say, “For some people it’s worth it to pay out of pocket to see a naturopathic physician, even when their insurance won’t cover it. People feel like it’s worth it if they get 50 minutes of uninterrupted time rather than leave with a prescription and a lot of unanswered questions.” Dr Gilardi also says “it makes you feel like you can make a difference and you feel empowered because you learn you can make the right decisions for your lifestile.”

It made me think about the changes I have already made and about changes I can still make to make my lifestile a healthier one.

Part 2 is a list of ailments and what can be done about them. Each has a discription of the ailment, a diet that help, a preventative, topical treatments and other types of therapies. It is written in very plain English so is very easy to understand.

I liked this book so I thought you might want to take a look at it too.

There are some changes coming

Filed under: Good For Your Whole Being — admin @ 9:19 pm

There are some changes coming here and at my website http://www.herbal-helpers.com/. When I first started my blog I thought to myself, I will post everyday and I did, for about a week. It was a nice thought but when it comes right down to it I just don’t have that kind of time right now.

So I thought maybe PLR articles and an article rotator. They seem to be very popular and very available. Well I tried that on the home page of my website but it just doesn’t sit right with me, most of the PLR articles I had read were just a grouping of disjointed thoughts that when read did not always make much sense never mind good advice. So what to do? hmmm…

Over the years I have collected a lot of information and done a lot of research. So while I was looking through some of my old note books I decided to start writing my own content again. I might not post knew stuff everyday but what I do post will be well researched and properly written.

So where to start, let’s see. How about with some more information on one of the first things I wrote about on my blog.

As flu and cold season progresses we need all the help we can get to fight them. One of the most delicious ways I know of is to eat and drink delicious treats made with Elderberries like jams, jellies, pies, wines and cordials. The Elder tree and some of it’s other parts are also used in herbal medicine and beauty products. I have a lot of information about elderberries that I have not published yet. So I will put it together some articles and publish them on my website. The first one is already published the next one will be ready in a couple of days.

Till next time rememberÂ

Me and MY TMJ

Filed under: Good For Your Whole Being — wombat48 @ 8:02 am

Ok, what the heck is TMJ? I looked it up on the web and it stands for Temoromandibular Joint Disorder. Simplified, severe jaw pain. Not all jaw pain is TMJ. If you suddenly find your jaw aching, see your doctor. It could be a sign of serious health problems, including an on coming heart attack. That being said, I will get on with my tail of woes, including all the things I did wrong, and how I am now attacking the problem.

First things first:Â

What I did wrong:

  • Self diagnosed: I grabbed my little bag of symptoms and struck out across cyberspace in search of the answer to what I was suffering from. (No doctor involved). If it had been a looming heart attack I would have been hooped.
  • Self medicated: The first thing I did was start taking an over the counter pain reliever coctail of 2 acetaminaphen and 2 ibuprophen, both extra strength. Not necessarily a bad thing once or twice, but I took this coctail every two to three hours for nearly a month. The affect on my stomach, bowels and sleep habits was horrible.
  • Treated the symptoms rather than the root cause: OK, so what’s wrong with that? I kept the pain away and found a measure of comfort. For starters pain is your friend. Without it you would not know there is a problem, and when you use enough pain relievers to keep the pain away you have no way of knowing when you are cured. Secondly, the longer you just mask the symptoms without attacking the root problem, the longer you will have the problem and the more severe and dangerous it may become.

Attacking the Problem:

First, my symptoms and their progression:

  • The pain started as a dry crackling sensation in the area of my upper jaw and cheek, that felt like the start of a sinus infection. (I attacked it with colodial silver and mild saline nasal sprays.) It only got worse, so I hit it with decongestants. That made things even worse.
  • Then it started to feel like a tooth ache. Since there was no apparent swelling, I assumed there was no absess. (again, a mistake. should have seen a doctor or dentist.) If you apply heat to an absess you could well pop it and spread infection through your body.
  • The pain progressed to a deep burning and throbbing throughout my entire jaw and left side of my face. It was so severe that at that point if I had figured gnawing my wife’s leg off would ease the pain, she would have a serious limp today.

On to how I am fixing the problem… (more…)

Something to chew on!

Filed under: Good For Your Whole Being — admin @ 1:25 pm

This is an article my husband received from one of his fellow camp cooks. It is very appropriate for this time of the year when we are picnicing more. I know I like to have all kinds of salads when I go on a picnic and most of them have things like mayonnaise onions in them.

DON’T KEEP CUT ONIONS”

Watch out for those spoiled onions…I had the wonderful privilege of touring Mullins Food Products, makers ofmayonnaise. Mullins is huge, owned by brothers and sisters in the Mullins

family. My friend, Jeanne, is the CEO.

Questions about food poisoning came up, and I wanted to share what I

learned from a chemist. The man who gave us our tour is named Ed.

He’s one of the brothers. Ed is a chemistry expert involved in developing most of the sauce formula. (He’s even developed sauce formula for McDonald’s.)

Keep in mind that Ed is a food chemistry whiz. During the tour, someone

asked if we really needed to worry about mayonnaise. People are always

worried that mayonnaise will spoil. Ed’s answer will surprise you.

He said that all commercially-made Mayo is completely safe.

“It doesn’t even have to be refrigerated. No harm in refrigerating

it, but it’s not really necessary.” He explained that the pH in

mayonnaise is set at a point that bacteria could not survive in that environment. He then talked about the quintessential picnic with the bowl of potato salad sitting on the table and how everyone blames the mayonnaise in it when someone gets sick.

Ed says that when food poisoning is reported, the first thing the

officials look for is when the victim last ate ONIONS and where those

onions came from (in the potato salad?). He says it’s not the mayonnaise (as long as it’s not homemade Mayo) that spoils in the outdoors.

It’s probably the onions, and if not the onions, it’s the POTATOES. He

explained that onions are a huge magnet for bacteria, especially uncooked

onions.

You should never plan to keep a portion of a sliced onion. He says it’s

not even safe if you put it in a zip-lock bag and put it in your refrigerator. It’s already contaminated enough just by being cut open and out for a bit that it can be a danger to you. (And doubly watch out for those onions you put on your hotdogs at the baseball park!)

Ed says if you take the leftover onion and cook it like crazy, you’ll

probably be okay, but if you slice that leftover onion and put it in your

sandwich, you’re asking for trouble. Both the onions and the moist potato

in a potato salad will attract and grow bacteria faster than any commercial

mayonnaise will even begin to break down.

So, how’s that for news? Take it for what you will. I (the author) am

going to be very careful about onions from now on. I see a lot of credibility in this info, coming from a chemist and a company that produces millions of pounds of mayonnaise every year.

(Dogs should never eat onions.. Their stomachs cannot metabolize them.)

Who knew!
